About PRP Therapy

Board-certified physician Ginger L. Urbaniak, M.D. is excited to provide her patients with platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) at Urbaniak Plastic Surgery to help refresh their appearance. PRP therapy is one of the most popular and innovative cosmetic procedures currently available in the aesthetic industry because of its natural, autologous approach and stunning results. The procedure utilizes your own plasma (derived from a blood sample) to stimulate your skin, which can effectively reduce the appearance of fine lines thoughout the face. This treatment can also be combined with microneedling to provide added benefits, such as increased collagen and elastin production. Ideal Candidates

PRP works by utilizing your own natural platelets to instruct the body to create new collagen for a smoother texture and evenly toned skin. Used in various ways, the platelet solutions can be introduced with injections or by using an automated micro-needling system or as a topical addition to resurfacing. PRP can also be injected with small needles around eyes and mouth to improve fine lines. Those who want to improve their skin tone and texture are typically great candidates for PRP therapy. Since it naturally promotes collagen production, it is also a fantastic treatment option for rejuvenating dull-colored skin. Speak with Dr. Ginger Urbaniak if you have certain any blood disorders, skin conditions, or anemia to determine whether it is safe for you to receive PRP therapy.

Procedure Technique

Once you're seated comfortably in one of our private treatment rooms, a sampling of blood will be taken from your arm and placed in a centrifuge machine. Usually, we take about four tablespoons worth of blood. After about 15 minutes, the different components of the blood will be separated and ready for injection. We will place the condensed plasma into a sterile syringe and inject it into the treatment areas. The PRP procedure usually only takes around five minutes, but this can vary patient to patient.

What to Expect

Platelet-rich plasma promotes the production of elastin and collagen naturally to create younger- and tighter-looking skin. Because it utilizes your own blood, the risk of allergic reaction or having adverse effects is virtually eliminated. You should expect your face to be a tad red after the procedure as  the plasma injection will contain a few red blood cells. A cold pack can be applied to the treatment site to reduce discomfort and minor swelling. We recommend you receive treatments every 4 – 6 weeks to achieve your optimal results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does PRP therapy cost?
PRP therapy costs will depend on how many areas are being treated and if the service is being combined with another cosmetic procedure. Dr. Ginger Urbaniak will be able to give you an estimated cost during your initial consultation at Urbaniak Plastic Surgery and discuss payment methods, as well as any specials on treatments. Our office offers patients a Diamond Membership program they can join to receive special discounts on several of our most popular nonsurgical services.

How long do results from PRP therapy last?
Improvements from PRP therapy can last for up to eight weeks. The longevity of the results will vary with each patient and also depend on the area being treated. One of the major benefits of PRP therapy is that it does not require surgery or a long recovery period. This treatment is also often much easier to afford.

What are the risks and complications of PRP therapy?
Possible risks for PRP therapy when done alone are very minor and include only prolonged bruising and swelling. When you receive PRP therapy with microneedling, potential risks may include mild scarring, pigment changes, and delayed healing. That’s why it’s important to have microneedling done by a skilled practitioner who has studied the process.

Will PRP help replenish volume?
A treatment of PRP therapy cannot restore volume in areas like your lips and cheeks. Although PRP injections offer impressive results because it rejuvenates your skin and boosts your production of collagen and elastin, it does not increase skin volume. If you want to contour certain areas on the face that appear sunken in, you may be a better candidate for dermal fillers.

Is PRP therapy painful?
Injections of PRP serum feel similar to a wrinkle filler or relaxer injection but with the additional step of extracting the plasma. Generally, most patients will feel a mild pinch or pressure during the injection. If you are worried about feeling pain, you may request local anesthesia before the injection is performed, which will decrease the momentary tenderness.
