What is breast augmentation?

Breasts play a key role in the conception of beauty and sensuality. The appearance of a woman's breasts often can be closely tied to her self-image and overall confidence. To address these feelings, breast enhancement surgery is performed to reshape the breasts and create a fuller, desirable appearance. This procedure has the potential to dramatically elevate the size and shape of the breasts, which is why it continues to be known as one of the most desired cosmetic surgeries of all time. Using either breast implants or an autologous fat grafting, this silhouette-enhancing procedure improves the size and shape of the breasts and is known to produce attractive, balanced outcomes. Board-certified plastic surgeon Roderick M. Urbaniak, M.D. is highly trained at executing this surgery effectively and performs many breast augmentations at his practice year round. During your one-on-one consultation at Urbaniak Plastic Surgery, Dr. Roderick Urbaniak will listen carefully to your concerns and desires. From there, he will be able to provide you with all of your available options and tailor a unique surgical plan to help you reach your goals.

What are my Implant Options?

In your private consultation with Dr. Roderick Urbaniak, your ideal implant will be chosen based on your body frame and the results you hope to achieve. Breast inserts can come in varying sizes and shapes, all of which are taken into consideration in order to achieve your desired look. The most commonly selected breast implants today are saline or silicone, which are approved for use by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). It's relevant to mention that women considering saline breast implants must be 18 years of age, while patients must be 22 years of age in order to have silicone implants. Two other types of augmentations include gummy bear implants and autologous fat grafting. The implant brands we offer patients at Urbaniak Plastic Surgery are Natrelle and Mentor. Aside from the type of insert chosen, there are other notable factors to consider before undergoing your procedure:

Size

Implant size is chosen based on the number of CCs of silicone or saline used. To determine the amount you need, Dr. Roderick Urbaniak will evaluate how much native tissue you have and weigh this information along with the size you wish to attain. During surgery, it is common for him to temporarily switch out multiple implants to get an idea of an ideal fit.

Shape

Breast implants take either a round or teardrop shape. Both shapes are commonly used, but the majority of our patients typically select a rounded implant. This type of insert often appears more natural and adds a fullness to the top portion of the breast, which is a look many patients desire from their augmentation.

Profile

Breast implant profile is, essentially, the projection of the breasts from the side view. The most common projections include a profile that ranges from low to extra high. Typically, rounded inserts provide a higher profile when compared to teardrop implants.

Making Your Choices

These options may seem overwhelming, but selecting the right implant is easy once your wants and needs have been discussed during your one-on-one consultation. These considerations, paired with the expert knowledge of Dr. Roderick Urbaniak, will make certain that your desired outcome is achieved.

Who is an Ideal Candidate for a breast augmentation?

The choice to undergo breast enlargement surgery is personal. If you are considering this surgery, it is important that you do it for yourself. You should be healthy and at a normal weight with breasts that are fully formed. You should also be the appropriate age to receive the implants of your choice (22 years old for silicone and 18 years for saline). If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your breasts because they look lifeless or petite, your self-confidence could benefit from this surgery. In addition, if your breasts have been affected by age, pregnancy, or weight loss then this procedure can renew their perky, plump appearance by increasing their volume. Breast augmentations also can be a welcomed answer if you weight train or have limited native breast tissue.

How does a breast augmentation work?

Incision type and implant placement are decisions that will need to be made prior to your surgery. During the procedure, an incision is created where the selected implant will be slipped into its position. There are two methods that can be applied for implant placement; these include either the submuscular placement (under the pec muscle) or submammary/subglandular placement (over the pec muscle). Your ideal implant placement will be determined based on your body type, implant size, lifestyle, and the professional opinion of Dr. Roderick Urbaniak. Regardless of the incision type employed, scarring is often well-hidden within the natural creases of the body.

What can I Expect after a breast augmentation?

Cosmetic breast surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. After completing the incision, the appropriate implant will be placed and deposited into a surgically created pocket. From there, the insert will be fitted into its proper position. Following the placement of the implant, the incision is closed with sutures or surgical adhesives. All patients will be taken into a recovery area after their surgery and carefully monitored before being released. You will be sent home wearing a medical sports bra to help with swelling. Within a few days, the swelling will start to dissipate and your breasts will begin to feel normal as they adjust to their new positions. While individual results may vary, most patients can resume normal activities within several days; however, exercise should be avoided for at least three weeks or until you get approval from Dr. Roderick Urbaniak. Breast enhancement surgery produces beautiful outcomes that look and feel natural. This procedure can be life-changing for many individuals and give them the opportunity to feel more confident.

Breast Augmentation FAQ

How much does breast augmentation cost?
Your costs for breast augmentation will vary based on your implant choices and if you are having any other surgeries at the same time as your procedure. When your treatment plan is developed during your consultation, Dr. Roderick Urbaniak or our billing specialist can discuss estimated costs and financing options. To ensure that your results match your goals and last a long time, it's important to focus on receiving quality care rather than the lowest quote.

Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your surgical plan could include breast augmentation, a lift, or both. A breast lift removes excess skin and raised the height of breasts on the chest wall, while augmentation addresses the size and shape of the breasts. During your consultation with Dr. Urbaniak, he will listen to your needs and goals before explaining your treatment options. A combination augmentation and lift are often a part of a mommy makeover to rejuvenate the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you want to breastfeed after breast augmentation, be sure to tell Dr. Urbaniak during your consultation. It is usually possible to breastfeed after implants as long as the correct surgical technique and placement were employed. However, pregnancy and breastfeeding can alter your results, so it's usually best to wait until after you have completed childbearing to have a breast augmentation.

Can I have my implants removed?
You may decide that you want to replace or remove your implants. If this decision is made, Dr. Roderick Urbaniak can perform breast revision surgery. During the revision surgery, your current implants can either be replaced with new implants or removed. If you choose to have your implants removed, you may need to have loose skin excised as well since larger implants can stretch the tissue. If you have any questions after your augmentation surgery, schedule an appointment at Urbaniak Plastic Surgery to discuss your concerns.

Do implants cause breast cancer?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating a link between implants and anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). This is not breast cancer but a cancer of the immune cells. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), implant-related ALCL is very rare and when caught early, it is easy to treat. Dr. Roderick Urbaniak encourages all patients with implants to attend regular screenings for breast cancer. You should contact Urbaniak Plastic Surgery if you notice any concerns, such as swelling or other visible changes.
